How to get yourself to clean your home when you don’t want to

Lets face it. Cleaning isn't always fun but it has its benefits.

Having a clean space will give you more mental clarity on all areas of your life. It will help you focus on relationships, goals and all things that are most significant to you. Not only is it a time saver because everything is neatly placed in its designated area, you will notice a change in your thoughts too. A clean space invites calm.

Cleaning not only includes your physical space, but also your electronic world. You can apply the same tactics below to clear your desktop, clear your downloads folder and organize your mailbox.

If overwhelm deters you from starting:

  • Set your timer for 10 minutes. Then clean up and declutter as much as you can during that time. Start with doing this a few times per week and maybe work towards making it a part of your everyday routine. Set a reminder for it. It is a form of holding yourself accountable, which will make you more likely to actually do it. If you can do more than the 10 minutes, great! If not, keep hacking away at it until your space is clean and decluttered.
  • Remind yourself that this is a process. Remind yourself of the reasons why you want to live in a clean space. That having a clean space will be one less big thing to have to worry about. That waking up, working, cooking and going to sleep in a clean space is worth it. That you are worth the effort.

To clean and declutter effectively:

  • All items must have a home. If they don’t, then there will always be those random items frolicking about your home that will be a real pain to find.
  • There must be purpose and reason to this exercise. You should remind yourself that you are worth a clean space.

Once your space is clean, it will of course not always stay that way. And that’s okay. Maintenance is always easier than having to do the deep cleans and declutters. Get to that point where you only have to maintain and continue to use the timer every time cleaning gets overwhelming.

Happy Cleaning!

xoxo
